Sugarlands Kodak Distillery

Project Overview
United Group Services was proud to play a key role in the construction of a new distillery for Sugarland in Kodak, TN. This project featured the installation of the largest pot still in the country.
Our comprehensive scope of work included the installation of over 48 tons of structural steel platforms and supports. Additionally, United set all of the equipment on the project. This included 31 vessels and fermenters, the record-breaking pot still, 4 grain augers, a hammermill, a specialty sugar maple charcoal filter skid, numerous filters, and 24 pumps.
We also completed the installation of a specialty Muria Boiler system, various air receivers, deaerator skids, condensers, a water chiller, and a cooling tower. Nearly 12,000 lineal feet of carbon, stainless, sanitary, and copper piping were installed. Pipe and equipment insulation was completed with over 100 custom-fabricated removable blankets. Finally, United installed all instrumentation and 3,000 lineal feet of air tubing.
Challenges
The project presented unique challenges. When we were engaged by the client, they were still working through completing the design and engineering. There was also an extremely aggressive construction deadline that had to be met. Additionally, we had to work closely with equipment and materials suppliers to overcome delays. This was our client’s first major construction project and United was able to bring 40 years of industry experience to guide them.
Solutions
United’s solutions included innovation through 3D scanning and prefabrication in our Cincinnati shop to ensure high precision and minimize on-site rework. Stringent quality control procedures were implemented to ensure all piping met food and beverage-grade standards. Strict tracking monitored components from the time they were ordered to when they were installed in the field. Additionally, 3D modeling facilitated accurate work packages for field crews and provided real-time progress updates.
United Group Services completed the construction of our new distillery and we couldn’t be more proud of the profesionalism and quality of their services.
