Nucor – Tunnel Furnace

Project overview

A new tunnel furnace was needed, complete with steel coils. The neat trick was going to be making sure the existing furnace could remain functional and in place during the construction of the new structure. With years of experience in the steel and foundry industries, United Group Services was ready to tackle this challenge.

Challenge

The trickiest aspect of this project was that the old tunnel furnace needed to remain intact and functional during each phase of construction on the new furnace. There were some areas of work that were going to be a little difficult to reach, and pandemic safety requirements presented yet another hurdle that needed to be cleared.

Solution

In addition to building elaborate scaffolding for areas that were going to be tough to reach, United Group Services offered Nucor industry leading pandemic safety measures that allowed for continued work throughout the pandemic. United Group Services is the only contractor that remained on site during the early and uncertain period of the pandemic. This eliminated the need for the expected congestion of other construction trades being in the same work area.

The project was completed ahead of schedule. With other places dealing with the pandemic shutdowns, United Group Services was able to utilize even more resources.
